Southeast Asian Music

Southeast Asian music is a large category that covers the musical traditions and instruments of this region of Asia. Southeast Asia consists of a very diverse geography; mountains, plateaus, coastal plains, and myriad islands across eleven countries, namely, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The diverse geography of this region parallels with the vast differences found within music genres that vary from country to country–or region to region in reference to Indonesia. Nonetheless, the music of Southeast Asia tends to carry a similar aesthetic, characterized by fluidity.
